Fun and relaxing workplace with great culture!
We get great discounts, my experience with management has been excellent, and it has been the first job I've had where I feel able to unwind at work rather than be stressed out.
Pros Good discounts, great culture, good breaks. Cons Low pay. Customers are often difficult, management practices are confusing. Managers will throw you under the bus to please a customer, even if you are following company policy. I was really good with customers, so they would keep me on the register until the very end of the night and only gave me 15 minutes to count out my drawer and would get impatient if I had any issues.
Managers also are required for all returns etc, so if you are unlucky enough to get a bunch of returns , managers get really impatient with you, even though it's the corporate policy that is inconveniencing them. Employee morale is very low during Christmas season. Pros Employee discount, working around books, author events. Cons Managers required for almost all things like returns and they disappear frequently.
Not only do they pay the bare minimum, they are severely understaffed. The barista is usually on their own the whole day unless there is a huge rush. And by huge, I mean huge. The management is also horrible and gets protected by corporate if they do anything wrong. Additionally, while other store may allow their workers to wear pins on their lanyards and have personalized name tags, we were not allowed to have that. Even so, they expect us to be grateful if they ask us to pick up a shift or do extra tasks that are outside of our pay grade.
I was one the only person on the floor who had to work the register and run between there and the back room to find books for custom. If you really want to be a barista or afford books, work somewhere else that pays a decent wage.
Other places in the area pay better and their baristas - more Pros Employee discount, coworkers. Cons Little to no benefits, management, understaffed, low pay. Bookseller - Temporary. Bookseller - PT. This job is perfect for someone who wants a lot of hours, but if you go to college or high school I would suggest looking for another place to work at.
I was hired as a cashier and was told I would end up working the sales floor. The seasonal hires however were moved from cashier to any department they wanted after 4 days or working there.
Yes There are 2 helpful reviews 2 No. Its was an okay job. Good employee discount for book and the cafe portion. Fun workplace, but has much to learn from the ever changing work environment. The discount is a huge selling point!
Too bad it feels offset by the non competitive pay. Barnes and Noble as a whole has a lot of work to do to catch up with the rest of the work world. Co-workers are nice and customers are hit or miss. Great beginner job! Pros Employee discount. Cons Scheduling. As a part-time bookseller, this position pays much less than it should for the amount of work they require. Some of the managers strive to create a friendly work environment, but some are very strict or downright hostile.
I would recommend working here for a short time for experience. But this is not a good long term position. Cons Short breaks, Expected to do too much for the small pay. True team spirit Managers look out for employees Get to encourage customers to read more and talk about books you love on the job Good employee discount.
Overall, a very solid job if you just need something part time and are passionate about reading. Still, if you have to work retail, there are much worse places to be. Pros Employee Discount. Cons Pay rate. Big changes. Changing the work concept. Seems positive but people take on more roles and more work making it stressful.
Choices are made on the fly. Pressure on booksellers to fine knowledge of books on their own. Pros Fun. Cons Stress. In 20 years of working, this is the most stressful job I've ever had. Talked down to constantly. Managers was catty and formed cliques, and promotions were constantly implied yet rarely given.
Overall a positive experience working with this company. Managers are very professional and invested in creating the best experience for their costumers and employees. I worked at the Loyola Law school Branch. Pros Reasonable scheduling, pay was fare. Cons Short breaks. Yes No There are 1 unhelpful reviews 1.
